By default this option should be enabled if you wish to change the settings of how this feature works or want to verify if it is enabled or not you can follow the below steps.
  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click Tools
  3. Click Options
  4. Click the Privacy tab

Stop Internet Explorer from opening Excel files


Cause

By default, Microsoft Internet Explorer will open Microsoft Excel pages within the browser window. Some users may find this unnecessary or may not wish to open the file and instead save the file to the hard drive and later open it with Excel.

  3. Click File types
  4. Locate "XLS Microsoft Excel Worksheet" -- Tip: Scroll to items beginning with 'X' by pressing the 'X' key on the keyboard.

How to reset Internet Explorer settings

  2. In the File Download dialog box, click Run, and then follow the steps in the wizard.
  3. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
